Effective spokespeople know the "Do’s and Don’ts" of media communication

October 2, 2017

Every interview is an opportunity to convey an organization’s message to a broad media audience.  Interview preparation makes the difference in maximizing media opportunities.

…know your key messages.

…ask the story angle or reporter’s focus.

…practice and be prepared.

…be honest and not evasive.

…speak in the public’s interest.

…project a calm, credible and confident image.

…monitor news coverage and correct inaccuracies.

…agree to the interview if it’s not in the organization’s best interest.

…assume you can speak “off the record.”

…answer simply “yes” or “no.”

…exaggerate or speculate.

…say, “No comment.”

…let the reporter control your response.
