Focused message helps pass law on PLAs

After decades of fighting the discriminatory practice known as “Project Labor Agreements (PLAs),” Associated Builders and Contractors of Michigan (ABCMI) turned to its longtime public relations firm, Lezotte Miller Inc., to develop and

launch an aggressive public relations campaign to convince state legislators and the governor’s office to ban Project Labor Agreements on state-funded construction projects.

LM Inc. developed a three-pronged communication plan to educate legislators using grassroots communication, media communication with major news outlets and helped create a statewide member task force.  On July 19, 2011, Gov. Rick Snyder signed the Fair and Open Competition in Governmental Construction Act into law, thereby outlawing PLAs on state-funded construction projects in Michigan.
